- What to look for when buying gifts for 1-year-olds
As babies transform into toddlers, they begin interacting with the world in exciting new ways, thanks to their rapidly-developing motor and cognitive skills. To find the best gifts for 1-year-olds, you’ll want to look for toys that meet them at their growth level, taking advantage of all the things they can do now and supporting brand new skills. And, of course, they should also be entertaining enough to keep them happy and occupied (even if it’s only for 20 minutes).
As a mom of two, I used my own experience of buying and using gifts for 1-year-olds, as well as the experience of BabyCenter staff members and parents in the BabyCenter community, to find the best toys that are both educational and fun. Whether you're buying toys to keep your child busy or gifts for their first birthday or a holiday, there are picks for everyone on our list.
How we chose the best gifts for 1-year-olds
We consulted the guidance from the AAP to learn about what toys are safe for 1-year-olds to use and what types of toys are developmentally appropriate. Based on this information, we ensured that all toys on this list help 1-year-olds to practice and develop skills like:
- Gross motor skills (Standing, balancing, and walking)
- Fine motor skills (Pressing, grabbing, twisting, and pulling)
- Cognitive skills (Understanding cause and effect, practicing problem solving)
We used BabyCenter's Community to find which gifts and toys 1-year-olds enjoyed most, according to their parents. Each of the toys on this list received positive reviews for:
- Developmental appropriateness
- Versatility
- Interactivity
- Value
We also took into account safety concerns, leaving out any toys that could pose choking hazards for 1-year-olds.
Best counting toy for 1-year-olds
Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Piggy Bank
Teach them counting and numbers with this colorful Fisher-Price piggy bank. It comes with 10 coins that they can placing in and pull out of the piggy bank, all while growing their fine motor skills. They can also press on the pig’s noise to hear different sounds, songs, and phrases, which makes it a great interactive toy to keep their interest. And, as your toddler gets older, they can practice their counting as the piggy bank counts as the coins are placed inside.
Both of my toddlers love playing with this, and I am always surprised by how long it can occupy their attention. My youngest daughter has even started counting along with it.
Heads up
This can be a little loud, and there is no volume control.
Parents say
“He puts his rings on the stacker..puts coins in the fisher price piggy bank..etc and he will try to clap his hands and look at us like ‘I did it!’”

LeapFrog Learning Friends 100 Words Book
At this age, your little one is probably starting to become more interested in reading (AKA flipping through books.) This LeapFrog book introduces them to the alphabet and helps them learn more words, even when you can’t be sitting by their side identifying objects for them. It features different word categories, like pets, animals, food, colors, and opposites, and toddlers can touch the words on the pages to hear the words spoken out loud. There are also sound effects, fun facts, and two songs, and the words can be heard in both English and Spanish.
My youngest got this for her first birthday and has played with it at least once a week over the past year. She loves listening to all of the pictures being identified, and I love that it’s something we can use together or she can use independently.

Some said that the sound is low and hard to hear.

Best musical toy for 1-year-olds
Baby Einstein and Hape Magic Touch Piano
Most 1-year-olds love listening to music. This Baby Einstein and Hape wooden piano is a great way to help them listen to some of their favorite songs, while also teaching piano basics. It comes with three sheets of music, which encourages toddlers to match the color-coded notes to the keys on the piano. Two modes of play allow them to create their own original songs or to listen to their favorites (there are six songs altogether). It’s easy to wipe clean and it’s adorable to look at.
“We got this for my daughter’s first Christmas, and she is still obsessed with it a year later,” says Leah Rocketto, BabyCenter’s Associate Commerce Director. “In the early days, she would simply press the button keys to make noise. Now, she knows how to play and search for a specific song and dances along to it.”
Leah also uses the piano as a tool to teach her daughter about colors, which she says are “bright but not obnoxious, so you don’t mind leaving it out all the time.”
I got this for my daughter for her first birthday, and she absolutely loved pressing all the keys and listening to the music she was making. My second child is just as obsessed, and even at 2 and 4, they both still enjoy playing with this one.
Heads up
It comes with volume control, and many parents say the sounds aren’t annoying.
Parents say
“We love our baby Einstein piano and leapfrog drum.”
“Your “no electronic” toy rule actually made me think of this electronic toy, haha. But it’s because it’s kind of neat! They’re instruments and you just touch the wood to make sound. It’s also a very pleasant sound, in my opinion.”

Best activity table for 1-year-olds
Skip-Hop Let’s Roll Activity Table
The Skip Hop Let’s Roll activity table offers plenty of space for interactive play, encouraging your child to stand up and walk around so they can explore every inch. This table stands out among others for its unique activities: a light-up piano, a slide with included balls, a swing, and light-up numbers. It plays sounds and music, and the table can also be taken off and placed on the floor if they want to sit and play. With so many engaging activities to choose between, your toddler will be entertained for hours – and they’ll be working on important fine and gross motor skills, plus learning problem solving and cause-and-effect, at the same time.
This was one of my daughter’s favorite gifts on her first birthday, and even my 4-year-old enjoyed playing with it when she got it. I love that it doesn’t take up a lot of space in my home, and it’s light enough that I can move it around easily.
Heads up
It could tip if your child pulls hard on it.

My daughters love playing with this together, and they also use the little figures in so many other different kinds of play separate from the train set.

As they start getting more comfortable on their feet, they’ll have tons of fun pulling the puppy along while they practice walking and eventually, running.
“My daughter was given this toy before she started walking, but that didn’t stop her from playing with the buttons for hours,” says Leah. “The string is long enough for your child to walk the dog, but not so long that it could be a choking hazard. The sounds can be annoying after a while, but the toy is just as entertaining with the sound turned off.”

A toy subscription can be a convenient way to get toys that match your child’s developmental stage without having to do much research. Lovevery offers age-appropriate kits for each stage of your baby’s life, from birth to up to 5 years old. The first kit for 1-year-olds is The Babbler Play Kit, which includes seven toys and a board book, all which target important skills like learning to balance, understanding cause-and-effect, continuing to grow fine motor skills, and more.
I was unsure of getting these play kits because of the price, but I quickly became hooked after just a few months. My kids go back to these toys again and again, and they’ve held up to all the wear and tear. I love all of the open-ended play they offer as well.

Skip Hop Zoo Pull & Go Submarine Monkey
When your baby is around a year old, it's time to turn bath time into fun time, especially since this is when they might start resisting being bathed. This adorable submarine monkey toy is a great way to keep them entertained in the tub. When the string is pulled, it winds the propeller and sets the submarine in motion. They’ll love watching this little guy whirl around the tub, and it’s a fun way to teach them cause-and-effect and work on their fine motor skills while pulling the string.

Toddlers love building blocks to construct tall towers and knock them down — or simply bang against each other! Tegu blocks come in more interesting shapes than typical blocks, and their embedded magnets make them click together with ease. Caregivers note that these blocks are worth the higher-than-normal price tags because of their beautiful construction and wide range of play opportunities. Many note that their older kids enjoy playing with them, too.

Best climbing toy for 1-year-olds
The Nugget
There’s a reason the Nugget couch is a favorite among parents: It offers hours of open-ended play, it’s super versatile, and can be used for years. The basic play couch comes with four foam pieces that can be transformed into exciting structures like a slide or fort or a basic couch. It can also serve as a basic couch for your child to lounge on during movie night.
“The Nugget has provided hours of play for my daughter,” says Leah. “We’ve made slides, mountains, and even obstacle courses with it. And because it’s firm, but still soft, I don’t have to worry about her landing to hard on it.”
Each piece is covered in a soft machine washable fabric for easy cleaning. Although it takes up space, it’s something kids won’t grow out of quickly.
Heads up
It’s pretty expensive, although many parents found that it was worth the investment for how many years their kids used it.
Parents say
“I mean there may be cheaper options out there, but we love ours. We got rid of a couch I hated and replaced it with two nuggets. The kids play with them and they are super comfortable. The only downside is when I want to use it as a couch and someone else has already made it into some kind of elaborate game.”
“I bought mine kind of on impulse but it’s been good. One has been enough for my two high energy kiddoes. And still cheaper than any other couch they’d just jump on and wreck anyway.”
“We have two nuggets .. totally worth it if you have a tumbling/jumping/ body throwing toddler like I do lol.”

What to look for when buying gifts for 1-year-olds
Buying presents for 1-year-olds is fun, because they can do so many things now. Newly mobile 1-year-olds will find a way to get around, whether it's by cruising, crawling, or walking, and appreciate toys that advance this mobility. Push toys are a classic gift for 1-year-old babies to help them get on their feet with support.
Children this age are also becoming more adept at using their hands. They can pick up small objects and manipulate them pretty well. They can make towers of two or three blocks – and then happily knock them down. They may also be able to grasp crayons, and start experimenting with drawing as early as 12 months. Those busy hands also enjoy any toy that involves putting things in or taking them out of a container of some sort. They love toys that nest and stack, as well as those that they can sort. Dumping things out to make a satisfying mess is another favorite activity.
Considering these milestones, we made sure each toy on this list met the following criteria:
-
Developmentally-appropriate: At 12 months old, toddlers are meeting so many developmental milestones, including motor skills, cognitive skills, and language skills. According to the AAP, this can include taking objects out of a container and putting them back in, searching for hidden objects, imitating, and starting to use objects appropriately. Toddlers are also just beginning to walk, so toys that help with coordination and balance are also a good idea. In order to encourage their growing skills as well as keep their interest, every item on this list targets one or more of these developmental areas.
-
Versatility: No matter how much money you spend on a toy, you want it to last more than one or two play sessions. We included versatile toys that can not only be used in a variety of situations, but that will also grow with your little one so that they don’t get bored of it after a month. We looked for toys that can be played with inside or outdoors, and toys that seem enticing even to older toddlers.
-
Safety: At the age of 1, toddlers are still young enough for choking hazards to be a major consideration. The AAP recommends that, up until 3-years-old, you should only buy toys and toy parts that are larger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking. We ensured that every toy on our list is free from small parts as well as parts that are easy to break off or could fall off.
