23 Golden Bachelor-inspired baby names that deserve the final rose
As Gerry's journey to find true love continues, we're taking notes on the best vintage baby names.
Every Thursday, Bachelor fans tune in to watch 72-year-old Gerry Turner endearingly and delicately navigate dating 22 women. The widower and grandfather from Indiana is handing out roses, going on one-on-ones, and enduring awkward group dates as the first-ever senior Bachelor. And he's not just making the contestants swoon: People are laughing, crying, and of course, rooting for this gentleman who proudly sports his hearing aids.
As The Golden Bachelor continues to serve up the drama this fall, the residents of Bachelor mansion can also offer some great baby name inspiration for parents watching at home. Gerry and the ladies on the show are all in their 60s and 70s – meaning their '50s and '60s names have the vintage flair you might crave. (Trust us, grandma names are all the rage.)
As Gerry and his potential love matches grace the screen each week, here's a little more about the popularity and meaning of each person's name to go with your next viewing party. Parents have been registering their babies' names on BabyCenter in real time since the 1990s – meaning we have the most up-to-date insight into how popular a name is at any given moment.
Which of these 23 baby names would get your first impression rose?
Gerry
The man everyone is talking about started by confusing us with the spelling of his name. Though it looks like Jerry with a "G," Gerry pronounces his name "gehr-ee."
"There are a lot of Irish families in my history," he previously told GlamourOpens a new window. "They told me that G-E-R-R-Y was the Irish way of spelling Gary."
As an alternate spelling of Gary, Gerry has Frankish origins, means "spear warrior," and ranked No. 5,564 in 2022, according to BabyCenter user data. It hasn't ranked at all this year, meaning no BabyCenter parents have claimed the name – so it's ripe for the taking.
Maria
The New Jersey-based health and wellness director only appeared in the first episode, but her name is a classic.
Maria is the Latin form of the name Mary, which has Hebrew origins and contested meaning (some potential meanings include "rebellion" and "bitter"). It's the only name on this list that's currently in the top 100 names, ranking No. 76.
Anna
Even though the retired nutritionist from New Jersey didn't make it past week one, her name is still a winning option.
The name Anna was most popular in the late 1800s and has seen a decline in popularity over the past century. It's still a big name, though, and currently stands at No. 110. Anna has Hebrew origins and means "favor" or "grace."
Faith
Gerry was instantly charmed by Faith from the time she skipped out on the limo entrance and hopped off her motorcycle. She then serenaded him and ultimately scored the highly coveted first impression rose.
Unsurprisingly, Faith – ranked No. 152 – comes from the English word faith, which is derived from the Latin root fidere, meaning "to trust."
Marina
Marina, an educator from Los Angeles, left the show due to a family emergency. Though it didn't air, ABC shared a deleted scene about her exit on InstagramOpens a new window.
The name Marina saw a significant spike in popularity in the mid-90s, but it now ranks No. 518 among BabyCenter parents. It has Latin roots and means "of the sea."
Sylvia
Sylvia is a Los Angeles native and described as a "total girl boss" on the ABC website. Sadly, Gerry said goodbye to her at the first rose ceremony.
Sylvia is the most common spelling, but it's also written as Silvia, who was the mythological mother of the founders of Rome. This Latin name means "woodland" and is ranked No. 633.
April
The "A" in the ASKN crew (a clique of four contestants, if you haven't been watching) stands for April, a therapist from Port St. Lucie, Florida, who was sent home during the fourth episode.
April is obviously a name of the month, and it's derived from the Latin word aperire, meaning "to open." It currently ranks No. 635 for girls.
Christina
Though the retired purchasing manager from Sierra Madre, California, said farewell to the show, her name remains a favorite.
Christina is a feminine form of the name Christian, which has Latin and Greek roots and means "Christ-bearer" or "follower of Christ." And while Christian is a popular choice ranked No. 87 for boys, Christina is less common for girls at No. 900.
Ellen
Ellen has emerged as an early front-runner. She's best known for her sweet friendship with Roberta, and recently went on a classic Bachelor "shopping date" featuring fashion designer Michael Costello. She was also the first person to tell Gerry she’s falling in love with him.
At No. 1,067, Ellen is a variation of the more popular Eleanor (No. 31). It comes from Greek and means "light."
Edith
How could you ever forget Edith and her glamorous golden dress and bouncy hair? She made quite the entrance, even though she left the show during the third episode.
The name Edith was most popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s – but it hasn't experienced too much popularity over the past few decades, even around the time that the contestant Edith was born. Currently standing at No. 1,067 on the baby girl name list, it derives from the Old English word ead, which means "wealth" or "prosperity."
Renee
Even though she didn't make it past night one, few can forget how Renee rocked a tracksuit to meet Gerry for the first time. The former Chicago Honey Bear cheerleader even performed a routine with a personalized cheer for "Golden Gerry."
Renee is a French name that comes from the Roman name Renatus, meaning "reborn." As of right now, it ranks No. 1,240 among BabyCenter parents.
Joan
Viewers miss Joan and her rhymes already! Though she sent herself home during the third episode, she left a lasting impression and shared a teary farewell with Gerry.
Joan now ranks No. 1,405. It's a name that comes from John, the English version of a Hebrew name meaning "God is gracious."
Leslie
The 64-year-old fitness instructor has also dated another leading man: Prince. In fact, she said she inspired his 1979 song "Sexy Dancer." Leslie and Gerry spent their one-on-one riding ATVs before she received a rose mid-hot tub.
Leslie originated as the name of a Scottish clan, but these days, it's the No. 1,652 girl name among BabyCenter parents. It comes from Lesselyn, a region of Scotland, and is thought to derive from Gaelic words meaning "holly garden."
Sandra
Sandra shared her somewhat shocking "Zen practice" upon first meeting Gerry. Hint: Many expletives were involved. Plus, she had another big surprise in the fourth episode: Sandra missed her daughter's wedding to appear on the show – talk about dedication!
Sandra has origins as a nickname for Alexandra or Cassandra, both Greek names – Alexandra meaning "defender of men" and Cassandra meaning "one who shines above men." Both of the longer versions are more popular, with Alexandra ranking No. 346 and Cassandra ranking No. 647, while Sandra ranks No. 1,652.
Susan
The woman responsible for everyone's good hair days on the show, Susan appears to be a friend to all. The "S" in ASKN, she's still in the running for Gerry's heart. The Golden Bachelor even told her she reminded him of his late wife.
Susan is a variant of Susanna, which comes from the Hebrew word for "lily." The name currently ranks No. 1,652.
Nancy
Another member of the ASKN girl group, Nancy is a retired interior designer from Virginia. She and Gerry bonded over losing their spouses during an emotional wedding-themed photoshoot, but they ultimately decided that their connection wasn’t strong enough.
Nancy hasn't been a widely chosen name in recent years, and it's now No. 1,966. It was originally a diminutive of Anne, which derives from a Hebrew name meaning "grace."
Pamela
Retired salon owner Pamela didn't receive a rose in the first episode, but if she had, she'd likely be doing everyone's hair alongside Susan.
The name Pamela dates back to the late 16th century, when poet Sir Philip Sidney used it in his poem "Arcadia." It's taken to mean "all sweetness," and is believed to come from the Greek words pan ("all") and meli ("honey"). Right now, it ranks No. 2,203.
Jeanie
The retiree from Tennessee is still a bit of a mystery since she left after the second episode.
A diminutive of Jean, Jeanie is another name that derives from John – a Hebrew name that means "God is gracious." No BabyCenter parents have used the name Jeanie this year so far, but it ranked No. 3,035 in 2022.
Kathy
Kathy is a spitfire who isn't afraid to speak her mind, and there was a bit of a rivalry brewing between her and Theresa. She's also the "K" in ASKN, and even though she and Ellen were pickleball champions, her time on the show ended during the fourth episode.
A nickname for Katherine, Kathy currently stands at No. 3,756. (Katherine, on the other hand, is far more popular at No. 478). It has Greek origins and means "pure" or "virginal."
Peggy
Peggy is a dental hygienist from Connecticut who was sent home in the second episode. Fun fact: She retired but then returned to her dental practice because she missed it so much.
The name Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, which comes from the Greek word margarites, meaning "pearl." Among BabyCenter parents this year, Peggy ranks No. 5,110, while Margaret is more common at No. 450.
Patty
After night one, the question on everyone's mind was, "Why didn't Patty get a rose?" If she looks familiar, it's because she's former Bachelor Matt James's mom!
Patty is a diminutive of Patricia, a feminine version of Patrick. It comes from the Latin word patrician, meaning "noble." Patty isn't currently ranking among BabyCenter parents, but it clocked in at No. 6,499 in 2022.
Theresa
Theresa had the most memorable first one-on-one date with Gerry, complete with a flash mob performing "Don't Stop Believin'" in a diner. Though sweet-natured, she's run into some issues oversharing about her connection with the bachelor.
A more popular name in decades past, Theresa now ranks No. 8,121. It's thought to derive from Greek words meaning "summer" or "harvest."
Natascha
New Yorker Natascha brought a lot of energy on night one, but didn't make it past the second rose ceremony. She did, however, offer up some great advice to the Bachelor team: Use chairs during the rose ceremony. Hear, hear!
One of the more unique names in the bunch, Natascha is an alternate spelling of the Russian Natasha – a diminutive of Natalia, which derives from Latin and means "Christmas Day." Natascha ranked No. 16,747 back in 2021, but no BabyCenter parents have reported using it since.
