Most common baby names in Mexico

The most commonly used baby names in Mexico are fairly consistent year to year, with religious and historical names, as well as popular double names, taking the top spots. But some newly emerging baby naming trends are starting to shift the landscape.

Sofía and Santiago are the most common baby names in Mexico, according to Mexico's National People Registry database. They are also the most popular names among BabyCenter en Español's users from Mexico.

For girls, traditional names like Guadalupe, Ximena and Gabriela have lost some of the popularity they had years ago while more modern names like Sofía, Valeria, Camila are very popular.

For boys, religious names are still at the top (Santiago, Mateo, Matías, Diego), followed by names inspired by historical figures like Leonardo, Emiliano, Alejandro or Maximiliano.

Common double names

Double names are very important in Hispanic cultures. Mexican most common double names start with Juan, José, Luís and Miguel, the favorite combinations being Miguel Ángel, Juan Pablo, Juan Manuel, José Luís and José Miguel.

We are seeing, however, a trend of building a double name with less conventional options, specifically with Liam and Ian for name combinations like Liam David and Ian Mateo.

Common Mexican double names for girls start with María or Ana, and María José is the most common combination, year after year. Ana Sofía, Ana Paula, Ana Victoria and María Fernanda are other favorite combinations.

The following new trends may change the most common names lists in the near future:

  • Many parents prefer to choose a variation of the name, mostly for the girls. We see Sophia instead of Sofía, Nathalia instead of Natalia, Ivanna instead of Ivana.
  • New names are becoming popular for girls (Julia, Amelia) and boys (Leo, Sergio.)
  • Names inspired by nature, like Luna (Spanish for moon) and Aurora are now very popular.
  • Italian names like Antonella for girls and Bruno or Alessandro for boys, as well as English names that have the same pronunciation in Spanish and English (Liam, Ian) or are being adapted (Lia for Leah, Eithan for Ethan.)
  • Artists and soccer players have a big influence on baby names, like Gael (Mexican actor Gael Bernal) and Leonel or Leo (soccer player Leo Messi). These names have become some of the most common now, and could lead the way to other celebrities' names (soccer players Iker, Sergio).
